Trustees & Local Governing Committee

I am writing to invite you to stand for election as a parent governor.

In our Academy we have provisions for one parent governor and there is currently one vacancy.

The governing board, with the headteacher, has overall responsibility for the running of the Academy. Governing bodies have three core strategic functions:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the Academy and its pupils, and the performance management of staff
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the Academy and making sure its money is well spent

No special qualifications are needed and the most important thing is to have a keen interest in the Academy and be prepared to play an active part in the governing board’s work.

Training is available free of charge for all governors and this governing board has an expectation that those new to being governor will attend induction training.

The enclosed sheet summaries the circumstances under which someone cannot serve as a governor. Please note that parent/ carers who have paid employment in the Academy of 500 or more hours per academic year, or who are elected members of the Local Authority are not eligible to stand in these elections.

Nominations must be from parents or carers with children at the Academy on the first day of the elections 13th January 2020

If you would like to stand for election please complete the nomination form on our website and return to office@discovery.peterborough.sch.uk no later than 27th January 2020. You may also include a short personal statement to support your nomination, which should be no longer than 400 words. The statement should cover the following:

  • Evidence to extent to which you possess the skills and experience the governing body desires (see above)
  • Your commitment to undertake training and development to acquires or develop the skills to be an effective governor;
  • If seeking re-election, details of your contribution to the work of the governing body during your previous term of office; and
  • How you plan to contribute to the future work of the governing body.

If there are more nominations than vacancies the election will be by secret ballot. If that is necessary, voting papers will be sent to all parents together with details of the ballot procedure.

Please visit the Trustees & Local Governing Committee page of our website www.discoveryprimaryschool.com for additional information and a copy of the nomination form.

Governing Body Committee Register of Interests 2019-20

The governing body is under duty to publish their register of interests on the DPA website. It sets out the relevant business interests of governors and details of any other educational establishments they govern. It also sets out any relationships between governors and members of the school staff including spouses, partners and relatives.

A Co-Opted Governor is a person appointed by the governing body and who, in the opinion of the governing body, has the skills required to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school.
