Hello and welcome to the Early Years Foundation Stage at Discovery Primary Academy. Here at Discovery Primary Academy we work hard to ensure your child has a positive start to their schooling and we endeavour to provide your child with many great experiences and skills which will equip them for their learning journey.

The transition process into school is key for ensuring the children settle as quickly and as happily as possible. The journey starts from when we first meet in June at an Information evening and it continues with settling in sessions like a ‘stay and play’, ‘outdoor fun and picinc’, ‘story times’ and visits to either previous settings or home. In our Foundation Stage we have 3 classes (Orange class, Lilac class and Pink Class) so once your child starts school with us they will spend their first week coming to school part-time and experiencing dinner time and then they will begin full time. It can be a very exciting and anxious time for your child so it is important that we get the transition right.

We spend the first few weeks getting to know your child and settling them into daily routines and becoming familiar with their environment. During this time, the staff will also be completing baseline assessment which will tell us what your child can do and what they enjoy doing.  We then begin more formal teaching sessions and introduce the children to the basic literacy and mathematics skills. It is important that there is a balance of teacher directed teaching and child initiated play. This organisation not only teaches the children the basics of and literacy and mathematics but also gives them time to explore and embed their own learning through carefully planned resourcing throughout the topics.

Our aim at Discovery Primary Academy is to provide a safe and supportive learning environment where we can build on children’s previous learning experiences in the home and other settings, provide relevant opportunities and appropriate content to develop their learning. We aim to assist your child in becoming a confident and happy learner so they are an independent and creative individual who is ready for future learning throughout their school life and beyond.

As the Head of Early Years it is my role to ensure smooth running of the Foundation Stage so if you ever have any questions please don’t hesitate to come and speak to me.
