In Foundation our children start their reading journey with PM Starter books. These books are perfect for introducing fundamental reading concepts and skills to early and emergent readers.
As the children progress and move into KS1 they will have access to a huge range of scheme books as well as non-scheme story books from familiar authors. These books encourage reading for pleasure and allow children to apply their phonics knowledge with stories featuring well-loved characters.
We also have Story Sparks and Snapdragon books that are emotionally-engaging fiction series that will fire children's imagination and deepen their comprehension skills. These books offer different writing styles, fonts and illustrators to help build children's reading confidence
Children also have access to a wide range of non-fiction books. That aims to engage children in reading for pleasure as powerfully as fiction does. The books are carefully levelled, making it easy to match every child to the right book. These books are intriguing non-fiction titles with links to the wider curriculum.
All children benefit enormously from books which gradually introduce new words and sentence structures, helping them to progress steadily and surely. Reading books are graded by difficulty in reading levels known as Book Bands and each Book Band has its own colour.
We have organised our books into boxes by their band which is easy to identify by their coloured label. This helps the children choose the right books for their reading ability. For example, the simplest books are in the pink colour band, and the top level is which is white. By allowing the child to choose their own book this encourages independence and instills a love of reading from an early age.
In KS2 children will move on to the Accelerated Reader program which is a computerized program that tests reading comprehension. Students select books on their reading level, read independently, and take an independent comprehension test on the computer or iPad. Each book is worth a certain number of points based on its length and reading level. This allows children some freedom in their choice of books which will encourage reading for pleasure.
If the child passes the quiz with a score of 80% or higher they receive a raffle ticket which enters them into a half termly prize where they can win a set of their own beautiful books. In addition to this the children earn points for each test they complete and these points can help them win a certificates. The more they read the more rewards they can get!
